Wisconsin man crashes into Manitowoc County Shell gas station sign after high-speed pursuit

MANITOWOC, Wis. (WFRV) – A high-speed pursuit in Manitowoc County that reached speeds of over 100 mph ended after the erratic driver crashed into a Shell gas station sign and fled on foot.

Deputies with the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office say they were warned of an erratic driver on I-43 northbound near Fischer Creek Road on the evening of June 6. The SUV was reportedly seen slowing down, accelerating rapidly, and swerving between lanes.

When a deputy spotted the SUV near Manitowoc, a traffic stop was attempted, but the driver fled away at speeds between 90 and 110 mph.

After exiting I-43 at Highway V and Hillcrest Road, the SUV suddenly crashed into the support poles of the Shell gas station sign on Highway V.

The driver, later identified as a 23-year-old man from Milwaukee, fled the crash on foot. A short time later, he was apprehended and taken to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into the Manitowoc County Jail.

Deputies say the man did not have a valid driver’s license and was arrested on two active warrants out of Milwaukee County and now faces the following charges:

  • Fleeing an officer
  • Two counts of bail jumping
