Wisconsin under elevated fire danger, DNR halts burning in 30 counties after over 2k acres burned

(WFRV) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging residents to check fire conditions and avoid outdoor burning, especially in areas with high or very high fire dangers.

According to a press release from the Wisconsin DNR, spring is the peak wildfire season in Wisconsin. The DNR reported that so far in 2025, 658 wildfire have scorched more than 2,200 acres.

The press release highlights that yesterday, fires near Ackley burned 23 acres and threatened 10 structures before being contained by fire crews and DNR teams.

Dry weather, low humidity, and gusty winds are creating dangerous conditions, the DNR states. Meteorologists say the future forecast shows no rain this week for much of central and northern Wisconsin, keeping fire risks high.

As a result, the DNR has suspended burn permits in 30 counties under it’s authority.

While vegetation in southern Wisconsin is starting to green up, lowering fire risk, other regions remain vulnerable.

  • Don’t burn outdoors until fire danger decreases.
  • Use equipment like chainsaws or ATVs early or late in the day.
  • Avoid dragging trailer chains.
  • Report wildfires immediately by calling 911.
