REID, Wis. (WFRV) – Swimmers and boaters are being asked to steer clear of a lake in Wisconsin after authorities detected extremely high levels of E. coli in the water on Monday.
According to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, routine water testing revealed elevated bacterial levels, prompting officials to close Mission Lake for public safety.

“For your safety, Mission Lake is temporarily closed to swimming and boating,” the sheriff’s office stated in a release.

The Marathon County Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department is conducting additional testing and working to identify the source of the contamination. The closure will remain in place until water quality improves to acceptable levels for recreational use.
“We appreciate your understanding as we work to protect public health,” county officials added.
