APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Appleton’s “Paint the City” mural project returned this summer with its largest artwork yet—transforming the tunnel behind Fox Commons into a vibrant celebration of diversity, youth voice, and community.
Led by artist Irineo (Neo) Medina, the project brought together 20 high school students from the Appleton Area School District to create a colorful mural over two weeks. The students, many from marginalized backgrounds, earned an art credit and a stipend while learning about leadership, inclusion, and the power of storytelling through art.

The mural, which features an array of painted shoes symbolizing diverse paths and perspectives, was unveiled on August 16 behind the Appleton YMCA. A crowd of families, youth, and community leaders gathered to celebrate with food, music, and words of inspiration from Medina and student speakers.
The project was made possible by Creative Downtown Inc., the YMCA of the Fox Cities, the Appleton Area School District, and grants from the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region.
The mural can be viewed in the alley behind 218 E. Lawrence Street.
