COLOMA, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials with the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office have identified those involved in a fatal mid-July crash on I-39.
According to a release from the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified at 11:23 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, of a northbound driver going the wrong way in the southbound lanes of I-39 near mile marker 124 in the Township of Coloma.
While responding to the initial report, deputies were alerted at 11:29 p.m. of a crash on I-39 near mile marker 125.

A northbound driver involved in the crash, 59-year-old Scott Overfelt from Wisconsin Rapids, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Waushara County Medical Examiner.
The wrong-way driver, 39-year-old Dana Markko from Amherst, was initially taken to UW-Health in Madison with serious injuries. Markko was said to have died from her injuries on July 19.
Officials say that a preliminary investigation, supported by witness statements, toxicology testing, and an investigation at the scene, confirms Markko was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
This was a tragic and entirely preventable event. Two lives are now lost-one an innocent motorist, the other a result of impaired and reckless decision making. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating incident.
