GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Green Bay schools are getting long-awaited federal funding after the Trump administration lifted a freeze on more than $6 billion in education grants.
The Green Bay Area Public School Board will meet Monday night for the first time since the announcement. At the federal level, the district had been waiting for roughly $3.4 million in Title funds.
These funds support essential programs like adult literacy, English language instruction, afterschool care, and summer learning.

In a statement, Superintendent Vicki Bayer said the district is relieved the funds are being released in time to avoid painful cuts.
“On behalf of the Green Bay Area Public School District, I wish to express our deep sense of relief that the U.S. Department of Education has released the remaining Title funds that had been allocated for Fiscal Year 2025,” Bayer said.
“These funds provide critical services to our students and their families, which were already contracted and staffed for the upcoming school year. Without these funds, difficult decisions would have been required to determine budget cuts that would have negatively impacted students and working families.
I wish to extend our appreciation to those who advocated for these funds to be released. Your advocacy is vital to ensure that all students have access to strong public schools.”

The Trump administration had withheld the funds starting July 1, calling it a temporary review to ensure alignment with White House priorities. Wisconsin was one of several states that sued over the funding freeze.
The Department of Education says the review is complete and funds will begin reaching states next week. Two weeks ago, it had already agreed to release $1.3 billion for afterschool and summer programs.
Monday’s school board meeting begins with a closed session at 5 p.m., followed by a public session at 6 p.m. A segment of the agenda is dedicated to legislative updates.
Local 5 will report any updates regarding this topic following the meeting.
