Tragic details released from two deaths believed to be connected in Wisconsin

COLUMBUS, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in Wisconsin have provided tragic details from two death investigations in Wisconsin that were believed to be connected.

According to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, a Columbus Police Officer was sent to Prairie Ridge Health for a report of a man, later identified as 85-year-old David Zittel, outside the entrance with a gun at around 6:20 a.m. on Monday.

As the officer arrived, it was reported that Zittel had shot himself in the emergency room waiting area. Medical aid was immediately attempted by medical staff, but he died from his injuries.

Columbus police officers requested that Dodge County Sheriff’s deputies respond to Zittel’s residence in the town of Elba to check on Zittel’s wife, Susan.

Shortly before 7:00 a.m., the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the residence and located 81-year-old Susan Zittel dead.

Authorities began a joint investigation and believe David Zittel shot Susan before going to the healthcare center and shooting himself. No other individuals are believed to be involved in this incident.

With this incident occurring inside a hospital, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office said they feel it is important for the public to be aware that this is an isolated incident and the community is safe.
